The challenge

Creating a digital solution to help reduce falling in for the elderly people (over 65).

Overview

Falls are a significant public health issue worldwide, affecting millions of older adults annually. In fact, around 36 million older adults experience falls each year, leading to over 32,000 deaths, making it the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths. Falls are particularly prevalent and expensive among Americans aged 65 and older.

Hypothesis

Many elderly individuals over the age of 65 are not well-informed about fall prevention techniques and require guidance to understand how to avoid falling.

Conclusion:

  • Old age has a negative connotation
  • Many seniors people feel that only they have this problem and others don’t, so they don’t want to talk about it so much with each other.
  • Seniors people have difficulty using digital products.

User interviews

We have conducted user interviews with 5 people to help us find how we can in anyway help reduce falling.

We have wanted to find a few things:

  • How do they use digital products and their opinion about them?
  • Did they fall and what is their thought on this topic?
  • What they do in their day to day.
  • How do they keep their physical health and mental health?

Findings

Insights:

  • Senior citizens are not hesitant to use digital products, as technology has become an integral part of their daily routine.
  • Seniors acknowledge the importance of learning new things to maintain mental agility.
  • They prefer to have face-to-face interactions with people and friends.
  • Senior citizens are aware of the causes of falls and their associated risks.

Pain points:

  • Finding new physical meetings, activities, and social events can be challenging for them.
  • Commuting may be difficult for seniors, increasing feelings of isolation and loneliness.
  • They want to discuss fall prevention, but often feel uncomfortable initiating the conversation.
  • Seniors find group settings helpful for physical exercise and cognitive activities.

HMW

4 main HMW questions:
  1. How might we encourage conversations about falls?
  2. How might we help them find new interesting physical meetings, activities, and social events?
  3. How might we help them find new areas of interest?
  4. How might we help make commuting easier for them?
Ideation:

Based on the HMW questions we have made as many as possible ideas to find the best solutions that can help them.

After sorting and voting we have decided on our goals.

Goals

  • The social network will have an open discussion about falls.
  • The social network will help them find new areas of interest.
  • the social network will help them easily find new interesting physical meetings, activities, and social events with each other.
  • The social network will allow them to commute with each other when going to the same event.
